Clearing the air — what astronomy actually requires
Before going further, let's address the four things most people believe about astronomy that aren't true. These misconceptions prevent more people from starting than anything else.
Myth
"You need an expensive telescope to see anything interesting." Many of the finest astronomical objects — the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Pleiades, every visible planet — are best appreciated with the naked eye or binoculars.
Reality
A clear sky and a free phone app gets you started tonight. Many astronomers observe regularly for years with binoculars before buying a telescope — and some never buy one at all.
Myth
"Indian cities are too polluted to see anything." Light pollution limits what you can see from city centres, but the Moon, all five naked-eye planets, hundreds of stars, and the International Space Station are all fully visible from any Indian city rooftop.
Reality
A city rooftop is a perfectly valid place to begin astronomy. Jupiter's moons, Saturn's rings, and the Moon's craters are unaffected by light pollution — they're bright enough to cut through any city sky.

The Planets
Five planets are visible with the naked eye: Venus (blindingly bright in morning/evening sky), Jupiter (second brightest, cream-coloured), Saturn (golden, steady light), Mars (distinctly orange-red), Mercury (near the horizon at twilight). Unlike stars, planets don't twinkle — they shine with a steady, calm light.

Stars twinkle (technically called scintillation) because their light is a near-point source passing through atmospheric turbulence. It is the combined glow of 200–400 billion stars in our galaxy, seen edge-on. From South India, the densest part — the Galactic Centre in Sagittarius — rises high and brilliant from March through August.

At 2.5 million light years away, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is the most distant object visible to the naked eye. From a dark site, it appears as a faint oval smudge slightly larger than the full Moon. It is best found by star-hopping from the Great Square of Pegasus — visible October through January. The light you're seeing left Andromeda before Homo sapiens evolved.

Meteor Showers
On peak nights of the Perseid (August), Geminid (December), and Leonid (November) showers, you can see 40–100 meteors per hour with no equipment. Lie on your back in a dark field, look toward the radiant constellation, and wait. Each meteor is a grain of sand burning up 80–120 km above you at 70 km/s. The Geminids are India's best shower — December nights are clear across most of the country.

The South India advantage: India's tropical latitude (8–13°N in South India) places the galactic centre in Sagittarius high overhead from March through August — higher than from anywhere in Europe or North America. The Magellanic Clouds, Omega Centauri, and Eta Carinae — some of the southern sky's finest objects — are accessible from South India in a way completely impossible from the Northern Hemisphere. The best single night of the Indian astronomy year: The Geminid meteor shower peaks around December 13–14 each year. The Geminids are India's finest meteor shower — the parent body (asteroid 3200 Phaethon) produces up to 120 meteors per hour at peak, December nights are typically clear across most of India, and the shower continues for several nights around the peak. Orion — The Hunter
Mrigashirsha / Ardra in Indian tradition
The most recognisable constellation in the Indian winter sky. Three bright stars form the famous Belt (Mintaka, Alnilam, Alnitak). Below the Belt hangs the Sword — the Orion Nebula (M42) visible to the naked eye as a fuzzy "star." Orion's two shoulder stars are Betelgeuse (red supergiant, upper left) and Rigel (blue supergiant, lower right).

Scorpius — The Scorpion
Vrischika — one of the 12 Rashis (zodiac signs)
The finest constellation in the Indian summer sky. Antares — an enormous red supergiant 700× the Sun's diameter — marks the Scorpion's heart. The curved tail sweeps south in a dramatic arc. The Scorpius-Sagittarius region is the richest part of the Milky Way visible from Earth. From South India at 13°N, the full Scorpion rises high enough to show its complete form — impossible from Northern Europe.

Sagittarius — The Archer
Dhanu — zodiacal constellation
The Milky Way's galactic centre lies in Sagittarius — the densest, brightest part of the galaxy's plane as seen from Earth. The distinctive "teapot" asterism (not an official constellation but unmistakable) points its spout toward the galactic centre. The "steam" rising from the teapot spout is literally Milky Way starfields. Sagittarius hosts more Messier objects than any other constellation: M8, M20, M21, M22, M23, M24, M25, M28.

Leo — The Lion
Simha — fifth Rashi
Leo is the signature constellation of India's spring sky. The backwards question-mark shape of the "sickle" (the Lion's head) is unmistakable, anchored by the bright star Regulus at its base. The Leonid meteor shower, which occurs every November when Earth passes through the debris trail of Comet Tempel-Tuttle, radiates from Leo — some years producing spectacular meteor storms of thousands per hour.

Crux — The Southern Cross
Known to ancient Indian navigators as a southern steering star group
Invisible from Northern Europe and most of North America, the Southern Cross is visible from all of India — an exclusive privilege of tropical observers. The four main stars form a compact cross, with the two "pointer stars" Alpha and Beta Centauri pointing toward it. The Southern Cross culminates (reaches its highest point) at midnight in late April. Finding Crux for the first time is a rite of passage for Indian astronomers.

Taurus — The Bull
Vrishabha — second Rashi · contains Rohini nakshatra (Aldebaran)
Taurus contains two of the finest naked-eye star clusters in the sky: the Pleiades (Krittika — the Seven Sisters, though most people can only see 6) and the Hyades (the V-shaped face of the Bull). Aldebaran — the Bull's eye — is one of the brightest red giants in the sky, a warm orange star that Indian astronomy identified as the nakshatra Rohini. Taurus also contains the Crab Nebula (M1), the remnant of a supernova that Chinese and Indian astronomers recorded in 1054 CE.

Step 6 — Your first dark sky night
Once you've spent a few evenings with a sky app and know the brightest stars and a few constellations, the most transformative single experience in amateur astronomy is your first drive out of the city to a properly dark sky. Pick a new moon weekend
The new moon (when the Moon is invisible) gives the darkest possible sky. The three nights before and after new moon are also excellent. Plan your dark sky trip to coincide with new moon — check any calendar app for the next new moon date. The seven days around new moon are prime time; a full moon washes out the sky almost as badly as city lights.

Choose your dark sky destination
From Chennai/Bengaluru: Javadi Hills (3–4 hours) or Yercaud (3.5 hours) for a first trip. From Mumbai: Bhandardara or Matheran (2–3 hours). From Delhi: Sariska or Rishikesh outskirts (2–3 hours). From Hyderabad: Nagarjunasagar outskirts (2 hours). You don't need to go to Spiti for a first dark sky experience — even Bortle 4 is revelatory after a city sky.

Allow 30 minutes for dark adaptation
When you arrive, turn off all white lights. Your eyes need approximately 20–30 minutes in darkness before your rod cells are fully dark-adapted. During this time, use a red torch only (a piece of red cellophane over a regular torch works). Do not look at your phone screen — even briefly — once your eyes have adapted. A single glance at a bright phone screen resets the entire 30-minute process.

Lie down and look straight up
This is not a joke or a metaphor. The human eye has a larger field of view when relaxed and looking straight up than when craning at the horizon. A picnic mat, camping mattress, or just a flat rock — lie down flat on your back and look directly overhead. You will see the Milky Way, thousands of individual stars, and eventually, as your eyes adapt further, the structure of the galaxy: dark lanes, bright clouds, the sweep of the galactic plane from one horizon to the other.

The three red flags — avoid any telescope with these features

Plastic
